Let’s say for the sake of argument, you are a dirt poor college student, working full time and supporting a family of 4 at 23-24 years old. You come across a group of people talking about doing something heinous. You mentally file it away for your own safety to avoid these people. Then cops show up on your campus and ask for help, but the MINUTE you open up saying you saw people talking they scream and call you a liar so you walk away.
Fast forward a decade or more. You’re a mom, work full time, and you have tried to just live your life and avoid those people you saw talking about murdering someone and you never went to the police because when you tried they accused you of lying. You read a local news article about the murder and the victim’s dad is just begging anyone with any information to come forward. Truthfully, this has been weighing on your conscious for years, and that heartfelt request just tugged at your heartstrings. That night you can’t sleep, so you stay up and you write a letter to the father. You mail it the very next morning, never identifying yourself or where you live, just giving the specific information you know. A description of the people bragging, what they said, and what they left in.
Now, fast forward a couple of years. You have been living your life. You assumed the police took this information and used it to help them, but you find out that NO, they say it was a lie. The letter was a hoax. That this person wanted attention or was the actual killer. I got one question, in the very next breath they ask the letter writer to come forward. How likely would you be to help? Anyone? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
You repeated verbatim what you HEARD the people say, but it turns out they embellished the struggle. That does not make the letter a hoax. You wrote immediately after her father’s plea because it tugged on your heartstrings, that doesn’t make it a hoax. It means the information isn’t complete. It means you just shit on the one person that could pick these bastards out in a lineup. Then to hear you have a "moral duty" to come forward? Why so you can shit on the person again? No way, so their family can be traumatized by the media circus or everyone would whisper about her in town or deny her service. No way. If this woman has a family to protect, her family comes first. Accusing this person does nothing to help the investigation and calling this person a liar does nothing to help the family heal.
It’s not bad enough the cops screamed at this college student, but even years later when she tries to reach out directly to the family she is shit on. Rebekka Gould’s murder will never be solved because everyone involved on the higher levels has no tact. The police fucked it. The media is fucking it. Even the PI involved is fucking it. I feel for the family, but it’s in God’s hands now.
When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
As Pilate did so do I.
